For the guitar heads

I’m an extremely amateur guitarist. Lately I’ve been into the 60-70s soul electric guitar sound. Wifey gets mad when I play this stuff cause the soul just oozes out the speakers, sticky drip dripping into a nasty puddle of funk on our wooden kitchen floors. What is really cool is to see how many of these guitarists were influenced by one another.

Take the Isley Brothers. my pops would spin their vinyl day and night. The sound still brings back memories of GI Joe, Shag carpet and green machines. One of the cuts, issued much later in their years, exemplifies their amazing sound, Voyage to Atlantis.

So, me being tone def, I’ve got the desire to grab my ax, throw a handkerchief on my head and play rock star. I was never blessed with the ability to play from ear, so I looked for a lesson and I came accross this awesome break down. This dude is off the chain!!

His cover is wicked. He breaks down the rift and demonstrates the relationship these licks have with All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix. Not sure if he’s accurate, but with the way this dude plays, he’ll get no argument from me.

Looking for some of the contemporaries for both these rock legends I came across one of the influential but brief heros of this era, Eddie Hazel. He defined the early Parliament sound and is probably most notable for his electric guitar novel, Maggot Brain. However, his rendition of California Dreaming is some bad ish. Looks like they took the you tube link down, but I’ll post the fm link.

Enjoy
